Partners: NEPAD

New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD)

The New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) Secretariat and The Micronutrient Initiative (MI) signed an agreement to collaborate in support of the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Program (CAADP). Under the agreement, MI will provide support to NEPAD as a Technical Partner in ensuring that food and nutrition security are adequately incorporated into the planning and implementation of CAADP.

The CAADP is at the heart of efforts by African governments under the AU/NEPAD initiative to accelerate growth and eliminate poverty and hunger among Africans. The main goal of CAADP is to help African countries reach a higher path of economic growth through agriculturally-led development which eliminates hunger, reduces poverty and food insecurity, and enables expansion of exports.

Technical support for the CAADP process through MI Africa's office in Johannesburg, South Africa has been ongoing leading up to the formal launch of the implementation process held in Accra, Ghana in May 2005. This agreement sets the platform for further collaboration in the years to come on matters relating to vitamin and mineral deficiencies and nutrition within the ambit of the CAADP itself.

Nutrition and Africa’s Development Goals

The Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Program1 (CAADP), prepared under the auspices of NEPAD, and recently adopted by African Heads of State, highlights the urgent need to reduce hunger and malnutrition and improve food security, in order to achieve Africa’s growth and development goals, as reflected in the first MDG. Improving the quality and diversity of the typical diet is an essential element of this strategy, given the limited range of nutrients in the diets of most people. Fortification of commercially processed foods with essential vitamins and minerals forms an integral part of the strategy.
