Training Manual - Capacity Building of Small Millers 2006

The training manual has been developed by the National Fortification Alliance of South Africa whose members are from the Ministry of Health-Nutrition, Ministry of Trade and Industry, industry representatives, UNICEF and the Micronutrient Initiative.

The fortification of wheat and maize flour has been mandatory in South Africa since October 2003. In order to complement other activities from this initiative funds were made available to support small millers to enable them to comply with the legislation.

In 2006 consultants were contracted to identify all medium and small millers in six of the provinces in South Africa (Limpopo, Free State, Kwa Zulu Natal, North West, Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga). Millers were visited by field workers and provided information on their knowledge about fortification and their compliance with fortification regulations. Additional information on their current business, economic and marketing constraints was also collected. This database is complete for all provinces. The results from this review have been used to develop training materials for small millers and develop a plan to support the small millers to comply with the regulations. The training materials are on CD with the Executive Summaries (1.2Mb pdf) available in local languages. To order copies of the CDROM or for additional information please contact us
